Fitzhugh's Woods Guestbook

Welcome to the new guest book for the Battle at Fitzhugh's Woods photo-documentary website. Due to technical issues with the old guest book, we're migrating to a new format that should serve us well. Messages left in the old guest book, dating from July 2003 to January 2007, have been archived.

To leave a message, click on "Fitzhugh's Woods Guestbook" above, and a hyperlink, "Post a comment," will appear at the bottom of the page. (You may have to scroll down to find it.) Click on that link to let us know your impressions of our website and to post questions and suggestions. We will respond promptly. Thanks - Herb Lunday

This represents part of our history about which I had little knowledge. Your family's hard work changed that. To think we used to drive those areas oblivious to the history hidden beneath the soil.

I found your site very interesting. My great-great grandfather, John Pope was in the battle of Fitzhugh's Woods. He was part of the Third Minnesota, Company I and was wounded and I assume one of those listed as missing after the battle. According to the eulogy at his funeral in 1896 given by one of his close friends - "on April 1, 1864 he was struck down by a large musket ball shattering his thigh bone and was left for dead on the field, at Fitzhugh's Woods...three days after the wounded were removed, when comrade Pope was found to be still alive, the ball was extracted and he lived, a cripple for life..." Family stories tell us he hid under a haystack for three days to avoid being taken as a prisoner of war.

Thank you for your work to preserve this site and it's history.
